Amateur astronomer Gennady Borisov from Crimea discovered a new comet in the solar system. She became his tenth discovery. The man told TASS about this on Thursday, August 20.

According to the astronomer, he made the discovery on August 17, 2020. On August 20, the Minor Planet Center at Harvard confirmed that the object is a comet in the solar system. Borisov noted that there is an open comet in the constellation Auriga, it can be well seen in a telescope in the fall, writes RT.

According to the website kp.ru, the comet was named the astronomer C2020 Q1 Borisov. In an interview with the website, Borisov explained that “all comets receive the name of the discoverer.”

It is noted that he managed to make a discovery with the help of a GenOn reflector telescope made by himself. The exact parameters can be determined after observations for six months by observatories in different parts of the world.

Gennady Borisov is known for pioneering the first ever interstellar comet 2I / Borisov in August 2019, the Zvezda TV channel reports. He recently discovered a new near-Earth asteroid. According to the astronomer, it is not dangerous for the Earth, its length is about 200 m.

In terms of his main activity, Borisov is in charge of a subdivision that controls near-Earth space in the village of Nauchny in Crimea.

As noted by the TV channel “360”, last week the Russians could observe the Perseid meteor shower, which is one of the most abundant and brightest starfalls. The phenomenon occurs annually on the night of August 11-12.
