More than 400 COVID-19 patients have died in the past 24 hours in France, but the number of intensive care patients has declined slightly for the second day in a row, according to official statistics released Wednesday.

Data from the French public health agency show 427 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours in hospitals, bringing the total death toll linked to the coronavirus to 46,700 since the start of the epidemic in France.

However, the pressure is easing a bit on intensive care, even if they remain under great stress: 4,759 COVID-19 patients are in intensive care, including 361 new admissions in 24 hours.

It has been two days in a row that COVID patients in intensive care have declined modestly: they were 4,838 Tuesday and 4,919 Monday.

In addition, there were 32,811 people with the virus hospitalized on Wednesday (regardless of the severity of their condition), against a record 33,500 the day before, a level that had not been reached during the first wave in the spring.

French President Emmanuel Macron will speak next week to announce on which points the containment will be relaxed.
