Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has blamed the United States for causing a “political impasse” between North Korea and South Korea. He stated this on September 5 during a video conference of the foreign ministers of the BRICS countries.

“For a while, the situation on the Korean Peninsula was generally stable, but a deadlock arose in the dialogue between the DPRK and the United States, because the political settlement of the issue of the peninsula has stalled,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry quotes the minister.

According to Wang Yi, the reason is that North Korea’s security and development issues have not been given due attention.

He called on the American side to take its responsibilities seriously and “respond to the DPRK’s legitimate and reasonable fears” with practical actions.

On July 7, Kwon Jong Geun, head of the DPRK Foreign Ministry’s US Department of Foreign Affairs, announced that Pyongyang did not intend to enter into negotiations with Washington.

The United States and North Korea began negotiations to denuclearize the peninsula in 2018. Then, the first ever summit of the American President Donald Trump and the leader of the DPRK Kim Jong-un took place in Singapore.

As a result, the parties agreed to denuclearize the DPRK in exchange for security guarantees and the lifting of sanctions from Washington. After that, the leaders met twice more, but did not achieve significant success in the negotiations.
