The candidate made these remarks at the start of his closing speech at the Democratic presidential nomination convention against Donald Trump.
“The current president has draped America in darkness for far too long. Too much anger, too much fear, too much division, ”Biden said. “Here and now, I promise you: if you trust me and hand me over the presidency, I will bring out the best in us, not the worst. I will be an ally of the light and not of the darkness ”, added the Democratic candidate.
“United, we can defeat this dark time in America,” he said.
The Democrat also pledged a national strategy on “day one” of his tenure to fight COVID-19.
More united than ever
Joe Biden therefore presented himself Thursday evening against America as champion of a Democratic family more united than in 2016 and which hopes to make Donald Trump the president of a single term.
The crowning achievement of a political career that began nearly 50 years ago, the 77-year-old former vice-president of Barack Obama formally accepted the Democratic Party nomination from his home town of Wilmington, Delaware.
In addition, actress Meghan Markle, wife of Prince Harry, departed Thursday from the neutrality normally attached to members of the British royal family to call for a “change” on the occasion of the presidential election in November.
The Métis star was speaking as part of a panel organized by the NGO When we all vote, co-founded by former first lady Michelle Obama.
“I think if you are participating in this event with us, it is because you are just as mobilized and motivated to see the change that we all need and deserve,” said Meghan Markle, without calling more clearly to vote against Donald Trump.
Trump attack
Crisscrossing America to occupy the field, Donald Trump went to Pennsylvania on Thursday, a stone’s throw from Joe Biden’s hometown of Scranton.
“The survival of our country is at stake […]. These people have gone mad, ”he said, painting an apocalyptic picture of the country if his opponents won on November 3.
“If you want to imagine life under a Biden presidency, imagine the smoldering ruins of Minneapolis, the violent anarchy of Portland, and the bloodstained sidewalks of Chicago in every city in America,” he added.
