Traditionally Republican, Arizona chose Joe Biden after a close vote, falling into the Democratic camp for the first time in nearly 25 years. This was not to the liking of some, who sent threats to Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, her office and via the internet, she said.

CCTV footage released by local media also shows a group of protesters outside Ms Hobbs’ Phoenix home, playing music and chanting “we want an audit”.

“Their tactics of constant intimidation will not prevent me from performing the duties to which I have taken an oath,” the Secretary of State said in a statement.

Several other election officials have reported threats across the United States, including Georgia, Nevada, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
