About 50% of men in Russia believe that women are better off not working. This is evidenced by the results of a survey by Otkritie Bank, published on March 4 by TASS.
At the same time, among women, only 22% of the respondents adhere to this point of view. About half (45%) of women and 28% of men believe that the fair sex should work for financial independence. 33% of Russian women and 24% of Russians believe that a woman should work for self-expression. At the same time, 36% of men and 19% of women expressed the opinion that a woman should work only when absolutely necessary.
More than half of men (55%) consider motherhood and keeping the hearth to be the main role of women. Most often, this point of view was expressed by the North Caucasus and the Volga Federal District (64% each), least of all – in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region (43%).
Among women, only 37% of the respondents have a similar opinion. Most of them believe that a woman herself has the right to decide what role in society will be the main one for her – 51%. Most often this was spoken about in St. Petersburg (67%), the Northwestern District (62%) and the Far East (60%). In the metropolitan area, 54% of women answered this way. This point of view is least widespread in the Southern Federal District (46%).
59% of women and another 46% of men believe that a man should support his beloved woman only by mutual consent. 35% of women and 39% of men agree that a man must support a woman. Only 4% of Russians and 10% of Russians recognize gender equality in financial matters. And 2% of women and 5% of men believe that a woman’s complete financial dependence on her partner destroys a relationship.
The majority of men (72%) and women (68%) believe that a woman can spend more than she earns, while about half of them believe that such a right is available only with the consent of a man. The other half believe that spending beyond our means is a natural privilege for women.
The poll was conducted from February 26 to March 2 on a representative sample of 1,000 Russians aged 18–65 years in cities with a population of over 100,000 people.
