Law enforcement agencies of Belarus opened a criminal case on the fact of the creation of a coordination council by the opposition. This was reported by Sputnik Belarus with reference to the Prosecutor General of the Republic Alexander Konyuk on Thursday, August 20.

“The creation and activities of the coordination council are aimed at seizing state power, as well as harming the national security of the Republic of Belarus. On this fact, a criminal case has been initiated under Article 361 of the Criminal Code, ”the Prosecutor General said.

Violators of this article can face up to five years in prison.

The creation of a coordination council (CC) for the peaceful transfer of power in Belarus was initiated by the former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. She did not recognize the results of the presidential elections announced by the country’s Central Election Commission, according to which the incumbent head of state Alexander Lukashenko won with 80.01% of the vote, and she gained 10.12%. Tikhanovskaya is now in Lithuania.

As reported at the headquarters of the united opposition on August 18, the council will include 70 people, and its task will be to ensure the transfer of power. The next day, the coordinating council elected a presidium of seven people.

Lukashenka believes that the creation of the opposition coordination council is an attempt to seize power. He warned that the government will take “adequate measures” to “cool the hotheads.”
