Washington | Donald Trump will not be able to run for a mandate in 2024, estimated the former American ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley in an interview published Friday, estimating that he had “dropped” the Republican Party by insisting on refusing his presidential defeat.
The former governor of South Carolina, a loyal supporter of Mr. Trump, currently on trial in the Senate for “incitement to insurgency”, also said she was “deeply troubled” by the attitude of the former president, who did not ‘has stopped contesting the outcome of the November 3 election.
“He will not run for a federal mandate,” she said during this interview, carried out a few days after the assault by supporters of Donald Trump on the Capitol, on January 6, when elected officials certified the result of the poll.
“I don’t think he will be there, I don’t think he can, he has fallen too low,” she explained.
The former ambassador also criticized the Republican Party for having supported the accusations of Mr. Trump, who denounced, without providing any evidence, “massive fraud” before and after the election which brought Joe Biden to power.
“We have to recognize that he let us down,” said Nikki Haley, in this first public criticism of Donald Trump, to whom she was very close.
“He took a path he shouldn’t have taken, and we shouldn’t have followed him and we shouldn’t have listened to him. And we must never let it start again, ”she added.
“I don’t recognize him anymore,” she said of the ex-president. “The person I worked with is not the one I have watched since the election. “
According to her, “everyone lied” to Republican voters to convince them that the Democrats had stolen the election.
Nikki Haley, who is regularly referred to as the White House, has confirmed she is considering a 2024 presidential bid.
Daughter of Indian immigrants, with a strong character, she became the most prominent woman in government and one of the most popular members of the Republican administration until her resignation in October 2018.
The impeachment process in the Senate, initiated by Democrats to prevent Mr. Trump from returning to politics, “is a waste of time,” she said.
The ex-president retains great influence over the Republican Party and a majority of Republican senators are expected to refuse to join the Democrats in condemning him.
