The departure of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago is recent and it is too early to gauge the impact of his presidency on the Republican Party, some indicators point here and there.
Earlier this week, there were reports in some American publications of a relatively large number of defections among party members.
Outraged by the attack on the Capitol and the attitude of the leaders of the political face of what the President, tens of thousands of members prefer to leave.
This wave is unprecedented and The Hill site specified that it could only be the tip of the iceberg. Historically, it is not unusual for voters changing party or prefer to have no official affiliation between elections, but the losses are significant.
Despite this bleak picture, there are some positive notes. Voters who leave the Republican Party do not necessarily go to the Democratic Party.
While it is true that we lose members, recruitment helps offset some of the shortfall. So hopefully close the gap before the elections midterm 2022.
You have read or heard it a few times already; Republican training is divided between the traditional conservative faction and supporters of Donald Trump. If the leaders and the strategists of the party have noted the frustration of the conservatives, they are still waiting to see the number and the influence of the supporters of the president, who will evolve within the formation within a few months.
Trump still influential
While their leaders and strategists are watching and waiting patiently, many congressional Republicans have already chosen sides. Already 45 senators opposed the trial for the dismissal of Donald Trump. Many elected ready to let bygones be bygones, despite the seriousness of the charges.
At this solidarity senators, there are the Republicans in the House who exercise significant pressure on their ten colleagues who have deviated from the party line by voting in favor of the impeachment.
Then there is the case of Republican Representative from California, Kevin McCarthy. The latter is ambitious and he is the leader of his formation in the House. He has his eyes on the speaker function if its troopers manage to get a majority in 2022.
McCarthy had sharply criticized his president after the assault on the Capitol, pointing the finger at him as responsible. Not only did he quickly swallow his words, but he met Donald Trump in Mar-a-Lago on Thursday to be severely reprimanded and to obtain forgiveness from the “godfather”.
Many of us wonder whether the assault on the Capitol had not sounded the death knell for Donald Trump, QAnon and the extreme right. If the Republican Party seemed to enjoy a window to distance himself from the influence of its most extreme elements, although it looks like it was soon closed. Donald Trump’s hold is still very real.
