Scientists from Switzerland built a mathematical model of the descent of a snow slab, which killed 9 tourists from Igor Dyatlov’s group, the accident occurred in 1959 on the slopes of Mount Otorten. Experts are sure that the cause of the trouble was a small avalanche and frostbite. The researchers relied on data from the investigation of the USSR prosecutor’s office.

They presented their findings in the publication Nature, scientists Johan Gaume and Alexander Puzrin conducted a three-dimensional computer simulation of damage to people from the descent of a snow board. The findings were consistent with the description of the injuries described in 199 by the prosecutor’s office.

A combination of a number of factors led to the death of the group: uneven terrain, damage to the snow layer for setting up the tent and the wind driving up the snow – this increased the load on the disturbed snow layer.

At night, the snow went – tourists jumped out and were blown away by an avalanche. The frost in minus 25 degrees killed tourists.

Last year, the Russian prosecutor’s office declassified materials from the investigation into the death of the group.
