The European Parliament is going to demand from the EU to stop the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline due to the arrest of blogger Alexei Navalny in Russia. This information was disseminated by the German television channel NTV with reference to the draft resolution.

As reported in the TV channel’s material dated January 20, the document urges the European parliamentarians to immediately stop the construction of the pipeline in the Baltic Sea.

In addition, the resolution proposes to introduce new sanctions against a number of persons, both legal and physical, writes Gazeta.ru. We are talking about those who participated in the decision to arrest and imprison Navalny. Among the sanctions proposed by the European Parliament are restrictions on movement across the territory of the European Union and freezing of assets.

It is noted that the draft of the corresponding resolution can be considered by parliamentarians on January 21. In this case, the sanctions provided for in the draft resolution must be adopted unanimously by the 27 EU member states.

On January 19, the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell, speaking before the MEPs, said that the European Union cannot impede the implementation of the SP-2 project, since it is a project of private companies.

Navalny was detained at the Sheremetyevo airport on January 17 on his return from Berlin. The procedure was carried out by the officers of the search department of the FPS on their return from Berlin on January 17. According to the department, the blogger was on the wanted list for multiple violations of the probationary period from December 29, 2020.

At the same time, the Federal Penitentiary Service in Moscow took into account the fact that since August 22 last year, the Russian has been treated in the Berlin clinic “Charite”. According to the clinic, he was discharged on September 23, but the blogger did not respond to the notification of his appearance on October 23 and did not appear on registration, according to which he was put on the wanted list.

Only in November did Navalny send a notification to the Federal Penitentiary Service that he was living in Berlin, where he was restoring his health. He did not provide official confirmation of treatment after discharge.

Navalny announced his decision to return to Russia on January 13. At the same time, the Federal Penitentiary Service reported that it plans to detain him, since the court must decide whether to replace his suspended sentence with a real one due to violations of the conditional sentence.

Navalny was brought to Berlin airport on January 17 in a motorcade with flashing lights. He was taken not to the terminal, but immediately to the airfield. He did not appear in the airport building and at the check-in counters. German journalists said that Navalny did not even personally receive boarding passes; employees of German special services also went through the procedure for him.

Nord Stream 2 is being built from Russia to the Federal Republic of Germany along the Baltic seabed with the aim of direct and reliable gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The USA, the Baltic states, Poland and Ukraine are against.
