The Moscow City Court recognized the arrest of physicist Anatoly Gubanov, suspected of high treason, as legal. Thus, the court on Thursday, December 17, rejected the appeal of the defense of the scientist, the press service of the court said.
“On December 17, 2020, the Moscow City Court upheld the ruling of the Lefortovo District Court of the city of Moscow on the selection of a preventive measure in the form of detention against A.A. Gubanov,” the statement said.
The meeting was held behind closed doors, as the materials of the criminal case are classified
Information about the arrest of Gubanov in Moscow appeared on December 3. It was reported that he will be in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center until February 2, 2021.
The investigation suspects Gubanov of transferring information that constitutes a state secret abroad, or of committing other actions directed against the security of Russia, in favor of a foreign state. He faces up to 20 years in prison.
On the same day, it became known that Gubanov took part in an international project to develop the Hexafly-Int hypersonic aircraft.
At the same time, the media reported that the scientist also taught at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). The rector of the university, Nikolai Kudryavtsev, in turn, stated then that the arrest of the physicist was not related to his work at Phystech.
On December 5, the side of the scientist’s defense announced that it would file an appeal against the court’s decision to detain him. In addition to this, the lawyer Olga Dinze stated that she was not allowed to familiarize herself with the materials of the criminal case.
