In Kaluga, sewage was discharged into the Terepets River for several days in a row. Local residents were the first to raise the alarm about the problem, who began to contact the appropriate authorities and write messages in groups on social networks.
Representatives of the city authorities, the prosecutor’s office, the ministry of ecology, and the water utility went to the scene. It was already established on the spot that there is an environmental emergency at Terepets, sewage runs into the river, local deputy Andrei Linkov writes on his Facebook page.
“There is an ecological emergency at Terepets. An accident occurred on the sewer networks near the local pumping station. For several days, sewage was discharged into the Terepets River. A serious blow to the ecosystem was inflicted. The pungent smell does not go away for more than a week,” Linkov said.
The reason for what happened is also voiced – there was a deterioration of networks that are more than 40 years old. The networks require major repairs for several kilometers. Repair is a rather costly process, the water utility has no funds for such work.
“A serious problem not only for Terepets, but for the entire regional center, Terepets flows into the Yachensky reservoir,” the deputy notes.
Water samples were taken from the river to assess the damage. Vodokanal will face litigation and heavy fines. The question of finding funds for the repair of networks will be raised before the city and the region.
