Before they could even say yes, they met at the police station; the bride and groom, guests and the pastor were arrested in the middle of a wedding in Peru for violating lockdown, police said on Sunday.
The ceremony took place in a Pentecostal church in the city of Huancayo, in central Peru, subject like the rest of the country to strict containment due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
“They were celebrating a wedding, which is totally prohibited, like any gathering of people,” police commander José Garcia told reporters. “We are trying to prevent the spread of this virus, but the population does not understand us,” he regretted.
According to the daily La Republica, the police broke into the church just as the pastor was asking the couple if they wanted to become husband and wife.
The ceremony was interrupted and the couple, the priest and the 12 guests were taken to the station. All were released after several hours of detention, not without paying a fine of $ 110 each.
With 29,687 deaths and more than 683,000 cases recorded since the start of the epidemic, Peru is the third Latin American country most bereaved by the coronavirus, behind Brazil and Mexico.
