Wearing poor quality sunglasses can lead to cataracts, retinal burns, corneal damage, and other eye conditions. On Tuesday, May 4, Tatyana Shilova, an ophthalmologist of the highest category, spoke about this in an interview with Ridus.

“When we are outdoors in bright sunlight, our pupils become small. This is our natural defense, but not always enough. Therefore, in order to avoid unpleasant sensations, we wear sunglasses, which must necessarily block ultraviolet radiation, ”said the expert.

The doctor dispelled the popular myth that the level of vision protection depends on the degree of darkening of the glasses.

“If the lenses of the glasses are dark, but at the same time they do not have protection from ultraviolet radiation, then under such spectacle lenses the pupil expands, and that part of the solar radiation that normally should not get there enters the eye. That is, we, on the contrary, harm the eye, and do not protect it. Long-term wearing of such glasses can lead to a number of serious eye diseases: cataracts, retinal burns, corneal injuries, etc. “, – said Shilova.

According to the ophthalmologist, when choosing this accessory, it is necessary to pay attention to the marking, which indicates what wavelength of the ultraviolet spectrum the glasses cut off. She also drew attention to the fact that glasses for mountains are different from glasses for the sea or glasses for urban environments.

On April 23, ophthalmologist, MD Dmitry Maychuk warned that redness of the eyes can be a symptom of an adenovirus or bacterial infection. The doctor advised to consult a specialist in case of redness of the eyes, even for those who suffer from seasonal allergies.
