Domingo Alves, professor at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine, has called Brazil a giant “laboratory” for breeding new strains of COVID-19.

“We have a ‘perfect storm’, because along with a high level of infection, there is no sanitary control. We have become a perfect laboratory. The already known list of new strains is just the tip of the iceberg, there should be much more of them, “Alves said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Of the most dangerous strains, the expert identified the Amazonian, which was first found in Manaus. According to the professor, more and more young people are beginning to enter the risk group, which leads to a “rollback” of Brazil in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

“The identification of new strains is sporadic, when we talk about mutations, we must mean the worst case scenario,” he added.

Also, according to him, the emergence of new strains during the vaccination period is a risk factor. This is due to the fact that such contacts of the virus create biological pressure, which leads to further mutations of the already mutated virus and can lead to the emergence of strains that break through the “antibody shield”.

On April 26, it became known that since the beginning of 2021, the number of deaths due to coronavirus infection in Brazil has exceeded the number of deaths from COVID-19 for the entire 2020. From January 1 to April 25, 195,848 coronavirus deaths were recorded in Brazil. This exceeds the number of 194,949 deaths recorded in the country from March to December 31, 2020.
