A serious escalation of tensions on the border of the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan with numerous casualties has occurred in recent days. The European Union (EU) welcomes the April 29 ceasefire agreement and further negotiations on a political settlement of border issues. The EU deplores the violence in recent days and expresses sympathy for those who have lost loved ones.

The European Union, including through its Special Representative for Central Asia, its Missions in Bishkek and Dushanbe, as well as in Brussels, maintains constant diplomatic contacts with the authorities of the two countries. Given the ongoing clashes in some areas today, the ceasefire must be implemented without delay in order to achieve a lasting and peaceful solution to the situation. Both sides must take all necessary steps to avoid any future conflicts.

The EU stands ready to provide, if required, technical assistance through its regional programs on border and water management, as well as political support to ensure stability and prosperity in the region, which are key priorities of the EU Strategy for Central Asia.
