Near the Pacific coast of the United States, 20 km from Los Angeles, oceanologists have found a burial of diesel fuel. It is reported by the Associated Press.
Diesel fuel was stored in barrels. In total, according to scientists, they contained up to 25 thousand barrels, that is, more than 3000 tons of fuel. The results of a study of the water helped to establish the place of burial of toxic waste: it turned out that it contained an increased amount of toxic substances.
The barrels lie at a depth of 900 meters, says Eric Terrill, director of the Institute of Oceanography at the University of California.
As it turned out, from the 1930s to 1972, US industrial companies dumped barrels of diesel fuel here. But no one could have guessed the true extent of the pollution of coastal waters. Now environmentalists are faced with the task of lifting and disposing of fuel barrels.
