Coronavirus infection hardly survives in chlorinated water. These are the conclusions reached by British virologists from the Imperial College, explaining that chlorinated water in the pool can kill the virus in 30 seconds.
A study on this topic was published by the Daily Express on April 14. According to scientists, people can safely visit swimming pools without fear of contracting coronavirus while swimming, since chlorine is an active disinfectant that can kill many viruses, including COVID.
“The COVID-19 virus has been found to be sensitive to this chemical, and pool water treatment methods, which also include filtration and disinfection, inactivate this pathogen,” explains Professor Wendy Barclay.
It is specified that the virus is reduced by more than 1000 times in 30 seconds, provided the concentration is 1.5 mg per liter of free chlorine with a pH of 7 to 7.2.
“This proves that chlorinated water pools with proper care and water filtration are safe to use even during the coronavirus pandemic,” the professor added.
In December 2020, cetylpyridinium chloride mouthwashes were reported to kill the coronavirus by 99.9% in 30 seconds, while toothpastes containing zinc or tin kill COVID-19 in two minutes.
