Bruce K. Pofahl, 62, a former employee of the Duck Creek Kitchen and Bar, walked into the restaurant at the Radisson Hotel on Saturday with a handgun and opened fire, Brown County Sheriff Todd Delaine said during a press conference.
“The suspect fatally shot two employees with a 9mm handgun,” the sheriff told reporters. “This occurred with approximately 50 patrons in the restaurant.”
He said Pofahl then walked outside and shot a third restaurant worker, later identified as Dan Mulligan, who underwent emergency surgery and is recovering from his injuries.
The two workers killed were identified as Ian Simpson, 32, and Jacob Bartel, 35.
Delaine said the entire incident took “10 minutes or less.”
He said Pofahl “was terminated earlier this year.”
Delaine said the officers who shot Pofahl at a parking garage are not being identified but said they have been placed on administrative leave as per procedure.
He said the investigation is ongoing to determine why exactly Pofahl opened fire.
“That is part of what we are doing now, to determine a motive,” Delaine said. “But this was not a random act or anything like that. We believe it was targeted.”
Police said the intended target was not at the casino when he showed up, so he opened fire on the unsuspecting workers.
The shooting took place in what Delaine described as a massive complex at the hotel, which includes the restaurant and the Oneida casino.
Mulligan’s family said he is expected to recover and had his jaw wired shut.
“We are so thankful he’s alive,” Mulligan’s sister, Caitlin, told reporters. “We didn’t know if he was most of the night. It’s horrific.”
