The head coach of the Wales national team, Ryan Giggs, was accused of beating his girlfriend while drunk.

As the French newspaper L’Équipe reported on Wednesday, April 28, he is accused of assaulting Kate Greville and another 20-year-old girl with bodily harm in November 2020, as well as isolating Greville from friends and family. According to the investigation, the actions incriminated to 47-year-old Giggs took place in his house in Greater Manchester, the football manager of Wales was detained in the same month.

“A woman in her 30s (Keith Greville – ed.) Sustained minor injuries but did not need treatment,” an unnamed law enforcement official said.

Giggs pleaded not guilty on Wednesday in court in Manchester.

The next hearing is scheduled for May 26. The former Manchester United midfielder has now been released on bail. If Giggs is proven guilty, he risks getting up to 5 years in prison.

Giggs was also temporarily suspended from the management of the Wales national team, noted on the official website of the Football Association of Wales (FAW). Robert Page took over the leadership of the team at Euro 2020.

In August 2019, Ryan Giggs talked about the benefits of kicks for football players. In particular, he advised Manchester United coaches and players to physically influence player Paul Pogba.
