The agreement signed in Washington indicates that the partially recognized Republic of Kosovo is not subject to international law. This was announced to reporters on Friday, September 4, by the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic.

“Today we signed a bilateral agreement with the United States, it is important that it is not trilateral. Thus, the document does not recognize the third party (Kosovo – Ed.) As an object of international law. This is very important for us, ”the Danas newspaper quotes the Serbian leader.

Earlier on Friday, the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo agreed to improve economic relations. This was announced by the Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Robert O’Brien.

The signing of the agreement was preceded by meetings of the American leader Donald Trump with Vucic and the Prime Minister of the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija Avdullah Hoti.

Vucic and Hoti are in Washington for two days of talks. The first round took place on September 3. Washington noted that during the meeting, Serbian and Kosovo politicians “made real progress.”

The day before, the Serbian leader, on the eve of the summit, rejected the point of negotiations on the recognition of Kosovo’s independence. In response, Hoti announced his intention to discuss only the issue of independence from Serbia at a meeting in Washington.

In 1999, armed confrontation between Albanian separatists from the Kosovo Liberation Army and the Serbian army and police led to the bombing of Yugoslavia, which at the time consisted of Serbia and Montenegro, by NATO forces. The Kosovo-Albanian structures in Pristina in February 2008 unilaterally declared independence from Serbia. According to the Serbian constitution, Kosovo is considered the autonomy of this country.

The self-proclaimed republic is not recognized by 60 countries, including Russia. In 2011, the Serbian leadership began negotiations on the normalization of relations with the Kosovar Albanians through the mediation of the European Union.
