Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido on Thursday announced that he had available $ 24.5 million, which had been frozen as part of the sanctions imposed by the United States, to help in particular health workers in the midst of the epidemic of coronavirus.
“We are in the phase of approval and release of funds,” said Juan Guaido, who in January 2019 proclaimed himself interim president of Venezuela and is recognized as such by a hundred countries, including the United States. .
Part of the money released ($ 18.9 million) will go to a subsidy plan coordinated with the Organization of American States (OAS) in favor of more than 62,000 health workers, said its communications team.
In addition, $ 1,182,430 will be released to pay the debts of Parliament and $ 4.5 million will go to support Venezuelans who run “a risk of death” in connection with the Covid-19 epidemic which has caused 311 dead and infected more than 37,000 people in the country.
The United States, which does not recognize the re-election for a second term in 2018 of Nicolas Maduro, has imposed a battery of economic sanctions to put pressure on the leader that they qualify as “dictator” and push him to leave power.
