The destroyers Donald Cook and Roosevelt of the US Navy on Wednesday, April 14, suspended their movement towards the Black Sea, Izvestia sources in the military department said. They changed their route and entered the island of Crete. They spent the whole day there.
The ships anchored at a US Navy logistics center in Souda Harbor.
In the evening, according to the resource Marinetraffic.com, the destroyers left the island, but the route of their movement is still unknown: they can either continue to follow the course to the Black Sea or remain in the Mediterranean waters.
The change in course took place the day after a telephone conversation between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden.
American ships sailed to the shores of Russia on April 10 from the Rota naval base in Spain. Earlier, the Turkish government announced that on April 14-15 they must pass the straits and enter the Black Sea.
Experts note that if the visit of the destroyers is postponed, it will be a sign of de-escalation of the situation in the region.
