American police on Saturday in Hollywood shot dead a man dressed in a bulletproof vest who had struck a police vehicle while backing up behind the wheel of his car, police said in Los Angeles (western United States).
Police were responding to a call when a car pulled up in front of their vehicle on Sunset Boulevard, braked and then backed up into it, city police said on Twitter.
“The driver of the car got out, he was wearing a bulletproof vest and had his right hand hidden behind him,” police said. “He walked towards (the police) who had gotten out of their patrol vehicle. He counted +3, 2, 1+ and started moving his arm forward, ”the police then opened fire. The man was shot and pronounced dead on the spot.
The famous Sunset Boulevard has been temporarily closed to traffic. A body covered with a white sheet lay on the pavement near a black vehicle with a side window on the driver’s side shattered, seen in photographs.
Specialized police investigators went to the scene to try to shed light on the circumstances of the incident, Los Angeles police said.
