Two others are missing in the town of Bitti, in the province of Nuoro, according to the same sources.

According to Repubblica, the victims are an elderly couple and a farmer trapped in his truck swept away by a river of mud.

The mayor of Nuoro, Andrea Soddu, on his Facebook page called on residents to take “maximum precautions” and stay at home until the end of the alert.

Strong winds and rains have been sweeping the region since Friday, causing cuts to power and phone lines.

A video posted on the website of the Unione Sarda newspaper shows a flood of water and mud devastating homes in a town presented as Bitti.

In 2013, floods in northern Sardinia killed 19 people.
