The United States confirmed its intention to continue to oppose the construction of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This was announced by the head of the press service of the US State Department Ned Price on Tuesday, March 9.
Answering the question that a number of Republicans in the US Congress called on Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to clarify the absence of sanctions against some organizations associated with the construction of the gas pipeline, Price said that the department’s efforts remain the same, and the administration is focused on preventing the completion of the project. On March 8, a number of Republicans in the House of Representatives of the Congress in a letter to Blinken expressed concern about the absence of restrictive measures against organizations involved in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline by the administration of President Joe Biden.
The congressmen gave a list of companies associated with the implementation of the gas pipeline, against which no restrictions were imposed, and urged to consider possible sanctions against them.
On March 1, it was reported that the German authorities are considering the implementation of the project, regardless of anti-Russian sanctions. It was noted that Berlin will discuss with Washington the lifting of sanctions against the pipeline as soon as the US Senate approves candidates for all posts.
Nord Stream 2 envisages the construction of two strings of a gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany. The project is actively opposed by the United States, which is promoting its liquefied natural gas to the EU, as well as Ukraine and a number of European countries.
