The lively controversy surrounding the installation of the monument on Lubyanka is explained by the fact that history for Russians is a “national sport,” said VTsIOM general director Valery Fyodorov in a conversation with Izvestia.
– We are all very interested in it, we are looking for grounds for national identity in it. These figures (Alexander Nevsky and Felix Dzerzhinsky. – Izvestia) form its certain aspects, elements. It seems that the disputes are about the past, but in reality – they are from the present day. If a monument to one of these figures were erected, it would symbolize the values that are associated with this person today, the sociologist noted.
Nevertheless, he urged not to exaggerate this topic, since the number of voters was only about 300 thousand people, and the population of Moscow – more than 12 million.
– Which monument to erect on the Lubyanka is clearly not the problem, the solution of which will now advance and strengthen us, consolidate us. Still, we need to think more about solving the problems of today, and they are known and obvious to everyone. Well, will we defeat inflation if we install Dzerzhinsky? Will we strengthen import substitution and ensure our economic independence if we install Nevsky? – added Valery Fedorov.
Also during the conversation, the sociologist spoke about the request of Russians before the Duma elections and the problems of non-systemic opposition.
