Germany may make an attempt to appeal to Ukraine to induce the country to cancel the decision on the water blockade of Crimea. This was announced on Monday, February 22, by a member of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, Senator from Crimea Sergey Tsekov.
“Most likely, Germany will make a decision that would prompt Ukraine to lift the water blockade from Crimea. But at the same time Berlin will continue to finance the so-called democratic institutions, ”he said on the air of the National News Service (NSN).
However, he is not inclined to believe that Germany supports democracy in Ukraine, rather, according to him, the country supports Nazism and anarchy. Tsekov emphasizes that this is a policy of double standards, since the FRG will leave some funding for Ukraine, despite the protest.
The senator also says that Berlin would like to improve relations with Russia more than with the United States, as it seeks to consider the issue of Ukraine’s water supply to Crimea.
“Berlin has allied relations with NATO, but at the same time Germany gravitates towards Russia and would like to have closer, friendly relations with our country. As reality shows, we are closer to Germany than to the United States of America, ”he said.
Tsekov also concluded that the Crimeans would not beg Kiev to lift the water blockade.
Earlier that day, German Bundestag deputy Waldemar Gerdt, representing the Alternative for Germany party, said that the water blockade of Crimea is a medieval method of siege, Germany needs to raise the issue of infringement of international law in the Bundestag. According to him, it is surprising that a democratic and tolerant Western society still does not comment on the water blockade of the Crimean region.
On February 18, State Duma deputy from the peninsula Ruslan Balbek said that the dam that cuts off the water supply to Crimea from the territory of Ukraine will not affect the life of Crimeans. According to him, there is no sensation in the statement of the Ukrainian official Anton Korinevich. At the same time, Balbeck expressed confidence that the construction of the dam will be fraught with corruption.
On February 17, the Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine in Crimea, Anton Korinevich, during a meeting with the head of the North Crimean Canal, Sergei Shevchenko, announced Kiev’s intention to build a dam in order to cut off the water supply to the republic.
In early February, the State Duma assured that the problems of water supply to Crimea would be resolved within five years – this will be achieved through the construction of new and reconstruction of existing reservoirs.
Last October, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced that Crimea would receive about 50 billion rubles to modernize the water supply system as part of a comprehensive plan to provide Crimea with reliable water supply. It provides for 14 measures, in particular, the development of new water sources, the construction of hydraulic structures, water supply and drainage facilities, as well as infrastructure overhaul.
In 2014, Ukraine cut off the water supply to Crimea through the North Crimean Canal, which provided up to 90% of the peninsula’s needs. Currently, residents and enterprises of the region receive water from local sources. Russian President Vladimir Putin assured that the problem with the water supply to Crimea will be resolved and the authorities will not save on this.
Crimea returned to Russia following a referendum in 2014. 96.77% of the inhabitants of the peninsula and 95.6% of the voters of Sevastopol voted for the accession. The procedure was carried out in strict accordance with international law.
Kiev did not recognize the results of the vote and is making plans to “return” the region.
