The amount of waste collected for recycling in Moscow in the first half of 2020 increased by 60% compared to the same period in 2019. On August 11, the deputy mayor of Moscow in the city government, Pyotr Biryukov, informed Izvestia about this.

For six months of this year, 413 thousand tons of recyclable materials were sent for processing, last year the figure was 257 thousand, Biryukov specified. According to him, such results were achieved thanks to a special program for separate waste collection, which started on January 1 this year.

“We tried to make the separate collection of waste as simple and convenient as possible, which is why a two-container system was chosen – blue containers are intended for recyclable materials, gray ones – for food and contaminated waste,” the official said.

By the end of 2020, the volume of recyclable materials in Moscow could reach more than 800 thousand tons, he predicted.

Since January 1, 2020, Moscow has switched to separate waste collection ahead of schedule. In the residential sector and next to social facilities, blue tanks were installed for the so-called useful components of secondary raw materials: plastic, aluminum cans, cardboard, paper. Also, gray bins for mixed waste appeared on the sites.
