Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have discovered why a material as soft as hair was able to quickly blunt hard steel. Examining the blades with an electron microscope, scientists noticed that steel is damaged only in certain areas.

Moreover, damage does not occur if the razor touches the hair strictly perpendicularly. If the angle of contact changes, the blade is between the hair scales, and they dull the cutting surface. For all the apparent softness, these scales turned out to be very durable.

For cutting tools to last longer, the steel used to make them must contain less carbon, which reduces strength. And this is a task for metallurgists, TASS reports.
