The organizers of the online climate summit aired Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of time – during a speech by French leader Emmanuel Micron on Thursday, April 22.
It is clarified that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, in the presence of US President Joe Biden, announced Macron’s speech, which was recorded. However, the head of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, was in the frame for several seconds. Later, during Macron’s speech, Blinken said that he would give the floor to Putin.
When the Russian leader finished his speech, Blinken apologized for the technical glitch. The broadcast of Mikron’s speech was continued.
Putin pointed out in his speech that Russia is responsible for its international obligations in the field of climate.
“We believe that universal agreements reached through the United Nations are a reliable legal basis for the joint work of states to control and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” the Russian leader added.
According to him, the country’s authorities are in the process of creating modern legislation that will ensure control over carbon emissions and will stimulate its reduction.
The climate summit, which is being proposed by the US administration, is being held remotely on April 22-23. More than 40 states take part in it.
The event was opened by President Joe Biden, announcing the United States’ intention to end harmful emissions into the atmosphere by 2050. The United States cannot tackle climate problems alone, he said. He called on other countries to take active measures to resolve the climate crisis. According to Biden, this is a “decisive decade.”
