Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that prohibits the confiscation of pets from Russians for debts. The document was published on April 30 on the official Internet portal of legal information.

Changes are being made to the Code of Civil Procedure. The list of animals, the withdrawal of which is already prohibited, includes farm animals: breeding, dairy and draft cattle, deer, rabbits, birds, bees, as well as the feed necessary for keeping them.

Now it will include pets that are not used by owners in their entrepreneurial activities.

This bill was submitted to the State Duma in September 2020 by the head of the committee on state construction and legislation Pavel Krasheninnikov and the chairman of the committee on ecology Vladimir Burmatov.

In December, the government commission on legislative activities supported a draft ban on the removal of pets from debtors, and on April 13, 2021, the State Duma adopted this initiative in the third reading.
