Last week, the city council passed a law that will allow 4,000 licenses to be issued to street vendors over the next decade. The idea is that everyone who wants to sell from the stall has the right to get their own cart, and not rent it from the current owners, who fight extortionate prices for it.

“The bill will create hope and new opportunities for these hardworking people, especially those who sell food,” said sponsor of the law, Margaret Chin (Democrat from Manhattan). “Today, many of them are victims of abuse in the context of the existing black market.

For renting a cart, current holders of a limited number of permits charge up to $ 30,000 per year.

The new law provides for streamlining all street trading in the city. The authorities should check those who have licenses today and make sure that for the past seven years they have been selling themselves and not illegally renting them out.

The issuance of new licenses will begin in July 2022.
