“The most popular book in the colonies is the novel The Master and Margarita. In second place – “Crime and Punishment” by Dostoevsky, in third – “Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexander Dumas “, – reported in the FSIN.

The top ten included such novels by Leo Tolstoy as “War and Peace”, “Anna Karenina” and “Resurrection”, as well as “The Three Musketeers” by Dumas, “Les Miserables” by Victor Hugo, “Quiet Don” by Mikhail Sholokhov and “The Brothers Karamazov” by Fedor Dostoevsky.

“In male correctional colonies, convicts prefer historical books, adventures, detective stories and science fiction, in women’s colonies love stories are most popular, and adventure literature in educational colonies,” the FSIN said.

In addition, Theodor Dreiser, Erich Maria Remarque, Boris Akunin, Guzel Yakhina, Nikolai Gogol, Daria Dontsova, Alexander Solzhenitsyn were included in the list of the most read authors. Among the poets popular are Sergei Yesenin, Alexander Blok, Anna Akhmatova, Marina Tsvetaeva.

American Paul Whelan, convicted of espionage in Russia, complained on July 1 that there were no books in English in the library of the Lefortovo Detention Center.

“I want to read Sherlock Holmes, Poirot, Tolstoy, Solzhenitsyn and books about spies in English,” Whelan said.
