In Russia, cases of infection with the deadly fungus Candida auris have been registered, but there is a cure for it. This was stated by Alexander Gorelov, deputy director for scientific work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, on Thursday, December 10.
“There are cases of Candida auris infection in Russia. This is not a rare fungus, it has been known for a long time. Perhaps, for the first time, the environment for its appearance appeared in Brazil, ”said the TASS specialist.
According to Gorelov, this pathogen is dangerous for people who have immunodeficiencies, including HIV infection, as it can lead to complications.
The first human case of Candida auris in Brazil was detected on December 8. The pathogen was found in a patient in the intensive care unit of a hospital in the state of Bahia.
Candida auris was first identified as a causative agent in humans in 2009 in Japan. Some of its strains are resistant to all three major classes of antifungal drugs. It is possible to accurately determine the microorganism only with the help of special laboratory methods.
On December 7, it became known about an unknown disease in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The sick have the same symptoms: headaches, back pain, cramps, nausea and vomiting. They also reported loss of consciousness after bouts of nausea.
