The head of the board of the Eastern Committee of the German Economy, Oliver Hermes, in an article for the Handelsblatt newspaper, listed the possible negative consequences for the energy system and the ecology of Europe in the event that Germany abandons Nord Stream 2, the Izvestia TV channel reports.
According to him, fuel production in the Netherlands, which will stop in 2022, should be compensated.
In addition, Germany’s refusal from relatively cheap Russian gas would be “fatal”, as energy prices in Germany could rise, and the weakening of the German economy would eventually hit the EU.
Hermes also touched on the environmental aspect. According to him, the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is modern, which means that it is better protected from gas leaks than old pipelines.
