German Finance Minister and SPD candidate for the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Olaf Scholz plans to extend the payment of benefits to those who, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions imposed, were forced to leave for part-time work and became partially unemployed.
“I am going to extend the period of benefits for partially unemployed people to 24 months,” the Vice-Chancellor said in an interview with the Bild am Sonntag newspaper today. According to the politician, the crisis caused by the coronavirus and its economic and financial consequences will not be able to simply evaporate in the coming weeks. This is a process that, obviously, will haunt us for a long time.
According to the general rule in force in the country at the moment, the period for the payment of benefits to partially unemployed is limited to a maximum of 12 months. In certain cases, it can already be extended to 21 months now, which, however, seems insufficient for the Minister of Finance, who is in favor of an extension to 24 months.
