Germany: How to buy the cheapest gasoline

Since July 1 this year, the German government has lowered the value added tax by six months in order to spur consumer demand. But the country’s car enthusiasts feel cheated: unlike most retail chains, which completely pass this benefit on to customers, fuel prices at gas stations have not dropped as much as they could have been …

According to the portal clever-tanken.de, at most gas stations in Germany at the end of summer 2020, a liter of E10 gasoline cost motorists an average of 1.25 euros, and a liter of diesel fuel – 1.083 euros. The difference compared to last year is large: at the end of the summer of 2029, a liter of gasoline cost 1.42 euros, and a liter of diesel fuel – 1.23 euros. But the difference could be even greater if oil companies and gas station owners fully transferred the tax credit to fuel buyers.

Representatives of the ADAC club are confident that the current prices for gasoline and diesel fuel can be reduced. To do this, motorists themselves must pay attention to price dynamics: “Those who refuel at a favorable time of the day and compare prices at different gas stations can not only save money, but also directly affect the competition between different companies and, accordingly, the price level”.

Petrol stations are among the industries hit hardest by the pandemic, with the temporary shift to work from home and fewer commutes and fewer people in Germany spend on refueling cars. According to statistics, the consumption of, for example, gasoline in the first half of 2020 decreased by almost 13% compared to the same period in 2019, and in April 2020, the level of fuel sales fell even by 35%. Therefore, gas station owners are now fighting for buyers, and this can play into the hands of motorists.
