The labeling of Russian media on Twitter as state-controlled is a double standard and a violation of democratic principles. This was announced on Friday, August 7, at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
“This is another manifestation of the systemic policy of” double standards “and discrimination based on country grounds, which are in line with Washington’s foreign policy guidelines and unfair competition of the American mainstream news with alternative sources of information,” the ministry said.
The ministry stressed that Western media sources receiving funding through the government were left unmarked.
The Foreign Ministry also expressed the hope that specialized international structures and human rights organizations would give an impartial assessment of the “dubious actions” of the administration of the American social network.
On August 6, Twitter announced the beginning of marking the pages of government officials, as well as state-controlled media, Gazeta.ru writes. Thus, the pages of RIA Novosti, TASS, RT, Vesti and a number of other media resources were marked with the label “State edition, Russia”. Also, the marking appeared on the account of the country’s government, President Vladimir Putin and Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev.
