The material is completely biodegradable

Chemists at Memorial University in Canada have developed a way to make sustainable plastic from fish waste. Experts say that the new material will completely replace polyurethane, which is a petroleum refining product and polluting the environment.

The basis for the production of environmentally friendly polyurethane was the fat from salmon scraps left over from fish processing in production. Thus, according to scientists, two problems can be solved at once: to dispose of food waste, which usually ends up in a landfill, and to create a safe biodegradable material.

The scope of application of polyurethane is very wide – clothing, footwear, household appliances, building materials and much more. According to the developers, the “fish” polyurethane can be successfully used for the same purposes as the chemical one. At the same time, experts say that the fishy smell completely disappears during a fairly long technological process, reports the “Independent”.
