The defense of Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko, who is in a US prison, will respond to the US government’s objections to early release by January 4. This “RIA Novosti” was told by his lawyer Alexei Tarasov.
According to him, the defense plans to cite the latest number of cases of coronavirus infection at the Danbury Federal Correctional Facility. The number of cases is currently growing, Tarasov added.
Earlier, on December 29, it was reported that the US government opposes the early release of Yaroshenko.
On December 19, the defense of the Russian asked a court in the United States to release him due to an outbreak of coronavirus in prison.
On December 10, Yaroshenko’s lawyer Aleksey Tarasov said that he would go to court with a request to reduce the term of his client’s imprisonment. The lawyer noted that a week earlier, a quarantine was introduced in the block where Yaroshenko is being held due to the fact that a number of prisoners were diagnosed with COVID-19 after mass testing.
It was also reported that the Russian continues to have health problems. So, from the moment of his arrest, he lost almost all of his teeth, which, in turn, caused difficulties with digestion.
Konstantin Yaroshenko was arrested by US law enforcement officials in Liberia in May 2010 on charges of preparing to transport a large consignment of cocaine. He was later deported to the United States, where in 2011 he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Yaroshenko denies guilt and calls the case against himself fabricated. He is currently serving time in Danbury Prison, Connecticut.
