Russia is building up unprecedented military power in the Arctic, and is also testing the latest weapons in the region, the American television company CNN said.
It is argued that Russia intends in this way to secure the north of the country and launch shipping along the Northern Sea Route.
The TV channel studied satellite images of the Arctic coast taken by the American company Maxar Technologies, from which it follows that Russia is strengthening airfields and military bases here, as well as pulling together military equipment and fighters.
“It is obvious that in the Arctic we are facing a military challenge from Russia,” the US State Department told reporters.
In addition, satellites filmed new radar stations near Alaska, airbases in the Far North.
Sources of the TV channel in the Pentagon stated about the fears of the US authorities that the new bases and weapons could be used by Moscow not only to legally protect the country’s borders, but also to establish de facto control over all regions of the Arctic.
Earlier, on April 5, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said that the United States monitors Russia’s activity in the Arctic and intends to defend national interests in this region.
On March 10, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that the alliance is increasing its activity in the Arctic due to the Russian presence. At the same time, he pointed out that Russia and the United States in the Arctic maintain a high level of cooperation.
