According to Chinese experts, the development of nuclear potential in Ukraine would not benefit the country and would displease most Western politicians. In this regard, statements about the possible return to the country of the status of a nuclear power is “stubbornness”, writes the Chinese military portal “Zhongguo Junwang”
Earlier, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Berlin Andriy Melnyk said that the country needs not only moral support from Western countries, but also modern weapons systems. “Perhaps it is worth thinking about the nuclear status,” Melnik said in this regard.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, 1.7 thousand nuclear warheads, as well as 176 intercontinental missiles, remained on the territory of Ukraine. This arsenal was eliminated in accordance with the 1994 Budapest Memorandum. In accordance with this memorandum, Ukraine joined the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and received security guarantees.
