At the same time, the head of the American foreign policy department stressed that for this the Russian authorities need to refrain from “escalation.”
“If he [президент России Владимир Путин] decides not to escalate, I think we can work together on issues of common interest, such as strategic stability. We have extended START-3, more can be done in this area, ”said Blinken.
According to him, an open dialogue between Washington and Moscow will have a positive impact on bilateral relations.
At the same time, the Secretary of State clarified that he did not know whether Putin formally accepted the invitation of his American colleague Joe Biden to the summit, but such a meeting is currently being discussed.
Earlier Tuesday, Biden declined to answer a question about whether he would set conditions for a meeting with Putin.
On April 25, the assistant to the Russian leader, Yuri Ushakov, said that the meeting between the Russian president and the American leader could take place in June, there are even possible dates.
On April 13, a telephone conversation took place between Putin and Biden at the initiative of the American side. The head of the White House declared his commitment to building stable and predictable relations with Russia in accordance with the interests of the United States and invited Putin to hold a meeting to discuss all issues at the highest level.
