On August 19, 2020 (August 6, old style), the people celebrate the Apple Savior (Transfiguration of the Lord)
History:
The widely known holiday of the Apple Savior (Transfiguration of the Lord) is celebrated on August 19. The holiday got its name from the word Spas, short for “savior”. In Greek, the name Jesus means “savior.” And the Savior became Apple, because in Russia, having borrowed from the Greeks the tradition of celebrating the feast of fertility by celebrating grapes on August 19, they replaced them with apples more familiar to Russians. So the Savior of the Transfiguration of the Lord became “apple”.
Meanwhile, the holiday itself dates back to August 19 more than two thousand years ago, when the Transfiguration of Christ took place in front of his three disciples: John, James and Peter. This event happened on Mount Tabor, when the prophets Elijah and Moses, having descended to earth, told Jesus about the trials awaiting him for the salvation of mankind, the crucifixion and the Resurrection.
Since then, all Christians celebrate August 19 as a great event, and in Russia they attach special importance to this day.
