Ludmila Koshman, a researcher at the Moscow Planetarium, said that this year the autumnal equinox will come on Tuesday, September 22, marking the beginning of the astronomical autumn.

According to the specialist, the autumn equinox is a unique phenomenon that equalizes the length of daylight hours and nights on the planet.

“On this amazing day, wherever you are, everywhere day will be equal to night: at the North Pole, in Russia, at the equator, in Australia, at the South Pole. The line of change of day and night passes exactly along the meridians, “she told TASS on Saturday, September 19.

The autumnal equinox will mark the beginning of an astronomical autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. So, after September 22, the length of daylight hours will decrease, decreasing daily by about 5 minutes.

“Astronomical autumn begins in our hemisphere on Tuesday – the day is getting shorter than the night. By the day of the winter solstice, December 21, daylight hours in Moscow and middle latitudes will be only seven hours, ”said Koshman.

The expert also noted that the next time the inhabitants of the Earth will witness an equal ratio of daylight hours and night on the day of the vernal equinox, which is expected in March.

In July, residents of the Omsk region witnessed a rare natural phenomenon – the so-called noctilucent clouds. Scientifically, they are called mesospheric.
