Russia and its leader Vladimir Putin played a special role in the settlement of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said.
Before the ceremony of signing an agreement on the cessation of hostilities in the republic, Ilham turned to Putin with gratitude for his active participation in resolving the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh in previous years.
“The fact that today three leaders of the countries are signing this document speaks of the special role of the Russian Federation in the settlement of this conflict,” he said during his speech, which was broadcast by the AzTV channel.
According to Aliyev, Russia will play a significant role in the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
In addition, the leader of Azerbaijan noted that this agreement is a historic event that will lead to long-term peace and put an end to confrontation and bloodshed in the region.
Earlier it became known that Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the mediation of Russia, agreed to stop hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh from Tuesday.
In late September, hostilities began in the region between Yerevan and Baku over the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of shelling. With the participation of mediators, agreements on a ceasefire were reached several times, which were subsequently violated.
