A boat carrying illegal migrants capsized off the coast of Libya, killing about 130 people. This was announced on Thursday, April 22, by the non-governmental organization SOS Mediterranee.
It is noted that her vessel Ocean Viking was sent to international waters off the coast of Libya after receiving information about three boats in distress in the area.
“Since we arrived at the crash site today, we have not found a single survivor, although we have seen at least 10 bodies in the area of the crash site,” the organization said in a statement.
The rescue operation was complicated by unfavorable weather conditions – the waves in the search area reached six meters. Shortly thereafter, an EU border control agency Frontex discovered fragments of a rubber boat near the scene of the incident.
In October, it was reported that a small boat with illegal migrants from sub-Saharan countries was wrecked off the coast of Tunisia. At least 11 people were killed.
