Many WWII veterans are buried at the historic Green Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. A group of researchers announced a new project that will perpetuate the memory of these people and pay tribute to their military merit.

Green Wood staff and volunteers will revise thousands of pages of archival documents and other records to gather as much information as possible about the veterans resting in the cemetery. As a result, a computer database will be created, available online for everyone who remembers and honors the participants in the wars and who is interested in history.

“It is very important not to forget those who lived before us – everyone who was ready to sacrifice themselves, who was a patriot and valiantly served their country. They have the right to count on our memory and respect for what they did for us, ”said project leader Jeff Richman. “That is why we take part in this and consider it an honor.”

Researchers working on Green Wood history already have experience. An online catalog has been compiled, which contains archival data on 5 thousand veterans of the Civil War buried here.

“The memory of people does not disappear. You have the opportunity to come and think about those who are buried here, says Jeff Richman. “But we can collect more detailed stories than just the names, dates and summaries on the stone of the monument. This is the goal of our work ”.

Specialists need the help of citizens. The administration is asking family and friends of WWII veterans whose remains are buried in Green Wood Cemetery to share information they have.

Indicate the dates and places of birth and death of the soldier, his history, how you can contact his family. Attach photos, if available. All this can be sent by e-mail to history@green-wood.com. Or call 718-210-3045.
